Summer 2019: Day 17 – The Grotto
This summer I’ve posted what we’ve been up to each day of the school holidays – you can see a summary of our adventures at our 2019: 42 Days of Summer page.
Today we watched Star Wars IV before saying a fond farewell to our visitors.
I dropped two friends in Sunderland, and asked the boys what they’d like to do for the rest of the day. “Go to the beach” was their reply, and Boy 2 added I could even go to the big Tesco on the way to get some spare shorts and a towel!
We decided to go to Marsden Grotto in South Shields. The boys loved the big lift, splashing in the water, searching the rock pools, climbing the hill you can only get to when the tide’s out, and throwing balls for a playful black Labrador. There were hundreds of gulls nesting in the rocks, and it was great hearing their calls, and watching them dive and play.
We stayed two hours, but there were several families who’d set a base for the day with shelters and camping chairs (Note: parking is £2 for 2 hours or £5 for the day in the car park outside, or free of you park in allocated spaces on the road a short walk away).
The Grotto offers pub and restaurant food, or you can grab a ☕🍺 🍷 🥂on their beach terrace. From 2018, it’s possible to stay over (from approx £90 for two people). I’d love to try this unique experience.
