Tonight I’ve been to see Hair the musical at Sunderland Empire.

Winner of the 2018 WhatsOnStage Award, this exuberant 50th anniversary production of the legendary rock musical Hair bursts in full psychedelic glory, direct from a sell-out London run.

I fell in love with the show when I saw the film at a friend’s sleepover in the early hours of the morning aged 14. I loved the music, vibrant colours, and rude words!

Welcome to the ‘Age of Aquarius’. It’s 1967 and Hair’s hippie ‘tribe’ youngsters in the East Village of New York are yearning to change the world, questioning authority and the American flag. Wild, colourful, sexually liberated and free, they are united in protest and song, under the shadow of the Vietnam War.

The show includes the following elements that may cause offence or trigger certain audience members:

– Full frontal nudity

– Strobe lighting (not suitable for audience members with seizure conditions)

– Strong language and racial slurs throughout

– References to drugs

Despite the show starting 30 mins late, I give it 10/10. I was relieved it wasn’t cancelled. The story roughly follows the film although different characters sing each others songs, and the ending has been changed.

I liked the chemistry between the actors, the audience interaction (at one point Claude was climbing over the seats), and the finale where audience members were invited on stage to dance.

If you get chance to see this (it’s on at Sunderland Empire until Saturday) it’s well worth it, especially with reduced price tickets from £13 on Travelzoo.
