A Celebration of Tourism in North East England

(Ad) On Friday (5th April), to celebrate English Tourism Week, I was invited to a celebration of the best tourism experiences that the North East has to offer in exchange for this honest review …

Celebration of tourism in North East England

I was invited to attend a 1.5 hour tour of Newcastle Castle and Cathedral, where lots of North East companies were exhibiting. It was an experiential event with the chance to hear, taste, smell and feel the thriving tourism industry of North East England, learn about it’s exciting future and discover how to get involved…

In the castle, the tour started on the roof, with free mocktails from The Botanist. We worked our way down through the various rooms, coming out of the dungeon and over the wooden bridge, taking in the outside spaces, before heading through the Black Gate. Some of the exhibits that stood out were:

Hotel DuVin – Tipple in the Tunnel (which includes a trip into Victoria Tunnel) and other events

BlackFriars restaurant – events including cooking classes for adults and children. They also offer medieval banquets

Alnwick garden – including the poison garden and if you visit within the next two weeks you can see the largest collection of Tai -haku (cherry orchard trees) outside of Japan – see Samantha Rickleton’s (North East Family Fun) post for further information.

Beamish Museam – it’s £51 for an annual pass for a family of four which includes access to all daytime events such as the Easter events;

• Egg jarping at Pockerley Old Hall
• Carrot lolly making at The 1940s Farm
• Easter crafts in The 1900s Pit Village school
• Egg rolling in The 1900s Town park on Easter Sunday

Here are some pictures;

On route to and within the cathedral I discovered experiential exhibits showcasing some of the best tourism experiences on offer in the North East, and the impact that tourism has on our region. At the end of the tour there were four large boards to collect people’s feedback and suggestions for improvements which were great to see.

Stand outs included;

Getting a free caricature on the Go North East Bus (sorry I can’t find you on google – but will treasure this).

Wylam Brewery – at Exhibition park – tours are available on Saturday Mornings. Thanks for the Jakehead IPA 6.3% sample (most popular beer).

Bishop Auckland Deer Park – I look forward to visiting in the near future

Biscuit factory at Ouseburn – Art gallery which hosts the art of 1000 artists a year.

Newcastle City Guides – sign up to their mailing list to keep up to date with tours.

Herb Garden (the restaurant near Newcastle Station with the horse on rollerskates outside) – thanks for the free pizza – it was delicious.

World Transplant Games Newcastle Gateshead 2019 – Thanks for sharing your stories about receiving a life saving donation (without which you or your child would not be with us today). Everyone is invited to attend various events including basketball, swimming badminton and cycling across the North East to show their support.

Azuma trains – thanks for the opportunity to see what these trains – coming 15th May on the East Coast line from Newcastle to Lonodn – will be like via virtual reality headsets.

Dippy on TourClick here to book a slot to see Dippy at the Great North Museum (Hancock Museum) 18 May – 6 November.

And last but not least…

Elmer’s Great North Parade – Following the success of the Great North Snowdogs in 2016, from August – November 2019, Tyne and Wear will welcome a spectacular art trail of 65 individually designed elephants based on the much loved children’s character, Elmer the patchwork elephant. As a family who visited all the Snowdogs in 2016 (including the furthest afield at Kielder forrest), attended the Farewell Event at Gateshead Stadium, and watched the online auction that raised almost £260K for St Oswold’s hospice in Newcastle (who’s vision is “we will make the most of time and improve quality of life for everyone in the North East living with an incurable condition and their families”). I can’t wait 🙂

I really enjoyed this experience, and it made me more proud that I already am to live in the in the North East.

What’s your favourite tourism company/thing to do in the North East?
