Saturday morning I attended Gibside parkrun. After the Windy Nook parkrun, some of us were talking about our favourite ones, and a few people mentioned Gibside, so I gave it a go.
The run starts near the cafe at the top of the wooden ramp at 9am on Saturday mornings. You don’t need to be a National Trust member to take part – you just need to have registered with parkrun. There is no charge to run or park.
Despite having three long uphills, there were big downhill sections too, including one near the end and then a final half a km of flat to finish. My time was slower than usual, but I was pleased I managed to run the full 5K. I have to agree this is my new favourite too as the scenery was amazing.
As we queued to hand our barcodes in a man was offering everyone a small piece of home baked cake. I felt sorry for the dog who’d run with the man in front who was not offered any – he looked very disappointed! His owner promised him a dog treat on return to the car.
A couple of years ago we had a National Trust membership and visited Gibside regularly. They boys loved the Strawberry Castle play area, and indoor play space at the stables and school holiday activities. During the summer, twice a month on a Friday, Gibside have a Beer and Bite night where members can eat wood-fired pizzas listening to live music.
Have you attended a Gibside parkrun? Or visited Gibside? What do you like best there?
